Build Report:I've built this effect and tried to change some componnents. A've tried many diodes (1N34A,1N100,1N695,1N914,1N4148,Zener 5.1V,...) and the best sounding are... 1N4148 and Zeners.
Also I've tried to replace NPN transistors and 2N5088 sounds very good so don't change them. Also tried to change PNP transistor, I've found REALLY GOOD MOD that improve octave effect - try to replace 2N3906 with 2N5088 (sounds gooood) or BS170 (MOSFET) which is the best, best, best,...it really improves the sound.

Build Report:First project! Went smoothly from etching PCB to soldering to wiring up switch and putting in enclosure. I chose it because of the small parts list. I also wanted something bold sounding. I think I got what I was looking for. Definitely sounds sweet high up on the neck. Only complaint, and this may be inherent to the type of effect, is that notes get dampened rather quickly. I think that a little boost or OD in front gives it a little more punch and holding power.

Build Report:Pretty easy build and the finished circuit yields some pretty wild sounds. Putting this in front of or after other effects gives it some different flavors as well. The octave up sounds are pretty consistent the higher up the neck you go and there is a lot of oddity in the lower registers. Very Interesting!

Build Report:Built this circuit this afternoon and it works great. I used 2N3904 instead of the 2N5088's because I couldn't get the 2N5088's locally, and it sounds fine to me. Using a Hotcake in front of it as a boost/distortion the Ringer starts to sound really cool. I like it more than the nick nitro i bought last year.

Build Report: This was my first project. I kind of combined this idea with a couple other versions out there mainly due to parts that I had access to. I really dug it - then I built a version of the Red Ranger and stuck it before this! With the low boost selected before this ringer I'm completely blown away. Totally musical for my needs. And for everything (+ the donation I'll be making here) I'm in for about $24CAN a pedal (battery, 1590C box, radio shack perf board, footswitch, jacks, etc.). Thank you so much for getting me started.

Build Report:This one is quite easy to build and get going. The previous review has it nailed. It is a ring mod with more than one note, but single notes on a neck pickup it is mostly octave up. Don't think this will be a perfect octave up like a digital pedal, but it sounds really cool in its own right. It can also get some really weird tones if you put a loud distortion in front of it!

Build Report:I've NEVER been a fan of ring modulators but this one has a different twist. There is no carrier frequency, so it sounds more like an octave divider. Try playing more that one note and all the math kicks in. As with most octave's it sounds best on the neck pickup with the tone control rolled down a bit. Try putting the Blue Clipper in front of it to make things REAL interesting. Easy build and no switches or pots.
